The mandarinfish does not have scales; instead it produces a stinky mucous that covers its body. Mating between mandarinfish involves a ritualized dance. The mandarinfish is one of the most famous fish in SE Asia as it appeared on a 39 kip postage stamp from Laos issued in 1987, and a 40 cent postage stamp of the Federated States of Micronesia issued on 26 August 1993.
